“EGON SCHIELE: THE RONALD S. LAUDER AND SERGE SABARSKY COLLECTION”
OPENS AT THE NEUE GALERIE IN NEW YORK.
Austrian artist Helmut Koller’s “Homage to Egon Schiele” featured in catalog.
PALM BEACH (October 10, 2005) - On October 21, 2005, Neue Galerie New York opens “Egon Schiele: The Ronald S. Lauder and
Serge Sabarsky Collection.” Together their collection comprises the finest gathering of works by Schiele in the United States.
Egon Schiele (1890-1919) was one of the greatest and most important artists of the twentieth century. Schiele’s figurative work of
uncanny intimacy brought a new openness to the art of his time.
His death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements.
The 504-page exhibition catalog traces, for the first time, Schiele’s enormous influence on contemporary culture. Austrian artist
Helmut Koller’s “Homage to Egon Schiele,” work # 88030, a self portrait in mixed media, is featured as an example.
Koller: “I am so thrilled to be part of such an important catalog and have the chance to be so close to Egon Schiele, It’s exciting
and really touching.”
Helmut Koller’s first encounter with Schiele’s art changed his life. “It had such an emotional impact that I eventually gave up
photography and became an artist. I still think, I really did not have a choice. I just had to do it,” says Koller
An established photographer, Koller worked for the Vienna State Opera before moving to the United States. He first exhibited
“ Homage to Egon Schiele,” in April 1990 at Neulengbach castle outside of Vienna, Austria. Neulengbach is the Village where
in 1912 Schiele was arrested and imprisoned for 24 days on charges of immorality.
In Austria, Koller celebrated a “…sensational success with his picture series, an Homage to Egon Schiele…”
(Die Presse, 25. September 1990). Exhibitions of this works followed in New York City, Chicago and Miami.
Today Helmut Koller is mainly known for his colorful, bold and festive paintings of animals which are collected on two continents,
America and Europe. Since spring 2004, Galerie Pierre M. Dumonteil of Paris, France, represents Koller’s art work and exhibits
his paintings internationally, as just recently at the World Fine Art Fair in Moscow. In Palm Beach Koller Is represented by
Serendipity Fine Art at the Esplanade on Worth Avenue.
